Moved my site onto a different publishing system

My blog has been running on an open source CMS (content management system) called Textpattern since 2004. Whilst I believe that this is an excellent CMS, it has to be said that development of the core by the open source community has been very limited for the last few years. I wish I had the time to help out, but I don’t. I therefore decided to move over to one of the most popular blogging systems, Wordpress – also open source. This has a huge number of users, followers and contributors. I do not think that it is as technically elegant as Textpattern or, to some extent, as flexible (it is certainly first and foremost a blogging system rather than a true CMS but can be made to work much like one). Integration with other systems (social networking sites, etc) is better catered for though thanks to it popularity. Templating is not as clean but it is much easier to switch between templates than in Textpattern and many many more are available.

There is an import script provided in the Wordpress package for Textpattern (amongst several other cms/blog sources) but it does not work that well. Fortunately, Alexandru Brie, a Romanian programmer and IT consultant, came to the rescue with revised guidance and an updated script.

Changing the look and feel of the site

I had a spare half-hour last night so decided to bite the bullet, implement a templating system (oddly, Textpattern – the CMS used for this site – does not have one as standard) and install a simple blogging style template.

I had a to make a few changes to support my particular configuration but that was relatively painless. I may well find some problems in due course.

Hopefully, this will be easier for some people to use, especially those using non-standards compliant browsers like Internet Explorer 6.

I will get around to adding some features and making things a little more sophisticated in due course. I find it somewhat stark and conventional compared to the previous look and feel but perhaps more useful for those not using RSS.

One advantage is that the comment feature is more obvious and easier to use although most still comment against the feeds or directly.

Blogging with LiveWriter

I have had a few queries about what I use to blog. I currently use Microsoft’s LiveWriter. It is good and free. There are lots of plug-ins available to add facilities. I tend to keep things simple though.

I have used most of the desktop blogging tools, some of the web front ends, and a lot of direct entry. LiveWriter supports most of the main blogs though and the main APIs as well which should cover the rest. It also produces reasonable code (unlike FrontPage in the old days). When posting images, it takes care of uploading them for me if they are not already web based.

I am someone who needs a spell checker – I do not always use it wisely, but it does help. LiveWriter marks incorrect spellings as you write and a right-click usually offers some good alternatives. (I also use WordWeb Pro – a great comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. It can be used to look up words from almost any program, showing definitions, synonyms and related words. It includes pronunciations and usage examples, and has helpful spelling and sounds-like links.)

I contribute to a wide range of blogs, mostly technical, plus my own personal musings on my primary website so it is handy to have a tool to help keep things organised. Sometimes, I share content, and this too is made easier.

The fact that I can write bits when I feel like it (keeping multiple drafts) is handy as well. I get around to publishing when I feel like it. Some of my blogs (especially shared blogs and sometimes my personal blogs) do not put things live straight away (partly to accommodate feeds). Thus, sometimes, I write a post over several days, publish a few days later, and actually make it live sometime after that! Oh well.
